Chapter 4 · Enhance and analyze·v1.0.0·Updated 7/17/2026·~14 min

What's changed: Created PL-300 Chapter 4 (domain: Visualize and analyze, part 2 = enhance and analyze): usability and storytelling (bookmarks, custom tooltips, edit interactions, sync slicers, selection pane, drillthrough, navigation, mobile), accessibility and personalization (alt text/tab order/contrast, Personalize visuals, automatic page refresh), and identifying patterns and trends (Analyze feature, binning/clustering, key influencers/decomposition tree, reference lines/forecasting, anomaly detection).

4.1Usability and storytelling

Key points

Understand bookmarks, custom tooltips, visual interactions, navigation, sync slicers, the selection pane, drillthrough, export, and mobile layouts.

A report’s value shifts with how it’s presented. Navigation and interaction design let readers follow the story without getting lost.

4.1.1Bookmarks, tooltips, selection pane

Bookmarks save the current state (filters/visibility/sort) and, with buttons, build presentations or show/hide toggles. The Selection pane manages visual visibility, layers, and groups, working with bookmarks. Custom tooltips show a separately built report page as a tooltip, revealing detail on hover.

4.1.2Interactions, sync slicers, drillthrough

In edit interactions, choose how one visual’s selection affects others: filter/highlight/none. Sync slicers link slicers across pages, carrying the selection. Drillthrough takes a selected value (e.g., a product) and jumps to another page for detail, with a back button. This differs from drilldown, which descends a hierarchy within the same visual.

4.1.3Navigation, export, mobile

Use buttons and a page navigator to build page-move flows. Export settings control PDF/PowerPoint/data export. A mobile layout creates a phone-specific arrangement so reports read well on tall screens.

Exam point

Cues: "save state to toggle/present" = bookmark. "detail page on hover" = custom tooltip. "how a selection affects other visuals" = edit interactions. "link slicers across pages" = sync slicers. "jump to another page by value" = drillthrough. "descend a hierarchy in the same visual" = drilldown.

Warning

Watch the mix-ups: (1) Drillthrough (jump pages) vs drilldown (hierarchy in same visual). (2) Sync slicers link across pages, unlike a normal slicer. (3) Bookmarks save state and can drive navigation. (4) Mobile layout is managed separately from desktop layout.

Diagram: bookmarks (save/toggle state, presentations) with the selection pane for show/hide; custom tooltips showing a detail page on hover; edit interactions (filter/highlight/none); sync slicers (linked across pages); drillthrough (jump to another page by value, back button) vs drilldown (hierarchy in the same visual).
