5.1Monitoring (Azure Monitor and AMS)

Key points

Understand monitoring VM/HA/storage/network with Azure Monitor, network monitoring with Azure Network Watcher, and integrated SAP-specific monitoring with Azure Monitor for SAP solutions.

Stable SAP operations require monitoring that surfaces both infrastructure (VM/storage/network) and the internal state of the SAP application tier.

5.1.1Infrastructure and network monitoring

Azure Monitor aggregates metrics/logs for VMs (VM Insights), storage, availability (HA), and networking, providing alerts and visualization. For networking, Azure Network Watcher (Connection Monitor, packet capture, NSG flow logs) diagnoses paths/latency/reachability. These monitor from the Azure-resource perspective and do not see inside the SAP application.

5.1.2SAP-specific monitoring (AMS)

Azure Monitor for SAP solutions (AMS) is a dedicated solution that ingests SAP-specific internal metrics (via providers) for SAP HANA, NetWeaver, the OS, and HA clusters into an Azure Monitor workspace for unified visualization/alerting. It captures SAP-tier health invisible to generic Azure Monitor (infrastructure). Distinguish "integrated monitoring including SAP internals" = AMS from "Azure-resource metrics" = Azure Monitor.
